Thanksgiving savings tips

Thanksgiving is a time to get together with family. However, hosting one could get very expensive. With these economic times we all could benefit from any savings we can get. Here's a few suggestions on how to save money for Thanksgiving.

1. Kill two birds with one stone!
It is not a pun! Some grocery stores offer free turkey with a certain amount of goods purchased. Store flyers will advertise a few weeks before Thanksgiving for this deal. Look out for them! They're a great way to purchase the items you normally need such as paper towels, bread, eggs etc while getting a free turkey in return.

2. Shop early.
It is just like the typical advise for Christmas shopping. Shop for sales before Thanksgiving. This can especially work well when buying canned vegetables, fruits, and side dishes. And .....don't forget your coupons! Sign up for email coupons from food brands and bring them with you. Although keep a watchful eye out for store coupons posted just outside of the store or along the aisles. These can bring you extra savings on already marked down prices.

3. Suggest a potluck dinner.
You can ask each family member to bring a specific dish. Perhaps you ask them to bring a specialty dish that they normally make that everyone enjoys. In my family, my apple pie has been a favourite so I'm always asked to bring it for our Thanksgiving potluck. In order to avoid having too many dishes of the same type, make a food list to note down what everyone's bringing. That way people get to enjoy different types of dishes all in one sitting.

4. Dollar Store Decoration.
Decorating for Thanksgiving can be done easily and inexpensively by using dollar store items. Red, yellow, and brown candles are fabulous choices for thanksgiving decor. However, if you feel that it is not enough dollar stores have silk flowers and vases that you can use as a table piece. Make sure it's not too big because the centre of attention should be on the turkey! You can also buy decorations for next year by buying them at the end of the season.

Hosting Thanksgiving should not be a stressful event especially money wise. It should be fun and meaningful for you and your family. Keeping these tips in mind will allow you to have a fun and memorable Thanksgiving while saving money at the same time.

Happy Thanksgiving!
