Top 5 ways for managing debt for the holidays

Planning your expenditures for the holidays is imperative in order to manage the after-the-holiday debt. We all love to buy gifts for everyone on our list, but wanting to give them the best may end up leaving you with empty pockets. Keeping within the budget is sometimes difficult, but not impossible.

To keep yourself from going over your budget, try to remember these ideas while you shop.

1. Carry cash. If possible pay everything in cash and stop when you run out. It is easy to carry a credit card instead of cash mainly for it's convenience. It saves you time from going to the bank and gives an impression of "unlimited" funds. We can only wish the unlimited part was completely true. The problem with using credit cards is that causes you to over spend. Carrying only a set amount of cash will help control overspending. Using cash and stopping when you run out of cash will be surefire way to avoid after-the-holiday debt.

2. Use a prepaid credit card. A prepaid credit card can be a great way in controlling your spending. Major credit card companies such as: Visa, Mastercard, and American express offer prepaid credit cards. The credit card is basically as good as cash, so when you use it it is not going to carry forward as debt. The same goes for gift cards. Buying gift cards can keep you in control of what you're spending without having to carry cash.

3. Use gift cards. Most times when I get gift cards from family and friends, I save it for next year's Christmas shopping. You can also use them to buy gifts for birthdays or any holidays that come up. That way buying gifts do not have to come out of my pocket. I even used gift cards I received for Christmas for my wedding (6 months after the holidays). They were $100 worth of gift cards for a liquor store. I used them to buy liquor for my wedding and it saved me tons by not paying per head for an open bar.

4. Setup a gift exchange or Kris Kringle. Instead of buying gifts for each family member have everyone agree to a gift exchange. Have your family draw names and set an amount that is affordable for everyone. You can also have each person list the gifts they would like to receive along with their names. This way everyone can save money and will actually like the gifts they received.

5. Set a budget and stick to it. Sounds cliche? Yes, it does. However, it is the best advise to avoid maxing out credit cards and going over budget after the holidays. Plan how much money you can spend before going shopping and stick to it. Use cash if possible. No ifs, ands or buts about it.

Planning and discipline are keys to successfully manage the after-the-holiday debt. Keeping these tips in mind will give you a worry-free Christmas holiday and enjoy the New Year debt free.

Top 5 Online Deal finder websites

TOP 5 Online Deal finder websites

Consumers like you and I are always on the hunt for bargains, but driving to a store is not always convenient. Or if you're like me, I tend to impulse buy online and more often that not I actually get better deals there.

Finding deals online are much easier these days with deal sites popping out everywhere. With products being offered at 50-95% OFF it's fast becoming a bargain heaven for shoppers. Not only do these sites help bargain hunters find awesome deals, it's also been good to local small business owners. It has been a great way to promote their product and it's an awesome way for bargain nuts to try something new. Another thing to consider is to earn money or credits towards your purchases if you refer someone to their website. It's easy to setup and a great way to earn free stuff,

Below are my top 5 deal sites.

1. Wagjag
2. Dealfind
3. Dealticker
4. Teambuy
5. Dealgetters

If you feel that there are other great deal sites out there don't hesitate to make a comment.

How to shop for bargains online on Holidays

I found this article to be quite helpful. So, I thought I'd share it with everyone.
Article originally from wihow.com

It is known that most stores and online sellers prefer to sell more goods, products or items at discounted prices on Holidays: Memorial Day, July 4th (Independence Day), Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year Day. Clearance, sale or closeout could be seen on Black Friday as well. Experienced shoppers are therefore waiting for these Holidays to come to shop for cheaper products. There are more opportunities for online consumers to find best deals than local store shoppers. But where can bargain hunters find their favorite products at their expected prices? Research and patience are needed to find the treasure box. Some experiences are provided here for interested online shoppers who will find that exclusive deals could be caught sometimes in this way.

Instruction

  1. Find any items or products you plan to buy in a local store or in an online store like amazon, bestbuy, staples, target, homedepot, sears, etc. before the Holiday comes and write down the product name and price.
  2. Go to shopping.com or nextag.com search for the same product. A list of stores that sell the product is then displayed with the price of the product for you.
  3. Compare the prices in the list with the price you found in the store and check whether there is a price you are interested in or not. Shipping fee should be considered also.
  4. Go to the online store to place an order on the product if the deal makes you happy.
  5. Wait till next day or some days later to search again if no deal is interesting you. If you find the deal, go to Step 4; Otherwise continue this step until the end of the Holiday.
  6. Wait till next Holiday if you are not in urgent need to buy the product.
  7. Adjust your expected buying price if you really want to purchase the product during the current Holiday season and do search again in case you still think all the offers are above your favorite budget or not within your expected price range. Continue until you strike a deal.

Tips

  • Consumers need patience and probably need to adjust buying prices at a time before the Holiday is coming.
  • Consumers need to start searching for bargains two or three weeks ahead. The prices of the products may return to normal when the Holiday begins. The secret is that the stores may increase the product prices when the Holiday really comes. They would like to promote the products and attract more visitors or shoppers a few weeks before the Holiday comes.

Warnings

  • You may miss the deal if you don't adjust the expected price sometimes when all stores are selling the product at a relatively high price.
  • You may miss the deal if you don't place an order when the product price drops below your expected price.

6 Ways to Shop for Brand Name Clothing

1. subscribe to email updates from the brand name stores. Retailers love to email coupons to their customers. You can get up to 50% off so watch for these emails. Take note, many of these retailers now accept coupons from mobile phones. That way you will not forget to print it.

2. Go to the sale rack! Some may think that the only thing in the clearance aisle are the broken items... think again! I have been able to purchase awesome deals from the sale racks. Sometimes you can also use the coupons sent to you on the clearance items which slashes more off the price! Of course, you'll have to check the fine print on the coupon to make sure it can be used.

3. Buy at the end of each season. If you can wait to get that fabulous winter jacket, then wait until the end of the season. This is typically around January to the end of February. Retailers mostly try to sell off their winter gear to clear out space for the spring items.

4. Buy on ebay. Ebay will have sellers that are typically getting rid of their old brand name designer clothing. You would surprised at all the options available. The best thing is, most of these could be brand new and never used.

5. Buy from thrift stores! If you have the time and patience to look through each rack, I bet you can find brand name clothing in there. I purchased Tommy Hilfiger, Jones New York, DKNY and Guess clothing many times at thrift stores.

6. For Holiday gift shopping, the best time to look for sales are during Remembrance day weekend, Black Friday weekend, and a few weeks before December. Don't forget the after holiday shopping. You can get humongous discounts after the holidays. So, if you're too stuffed to eat more holiday dinners after the 25th, go out and shop and burn off the calories!

Happy shopping!

US Black Friday shopping tips

Hello fellow Canadians!

Our Canadian Thanksgiving has ended, but the U.S. Thanksgiving is just around the corner. US Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November and we all know what follows after it! Black Friday!

With the Canadian dollar veering closely at par with the US dollar, this is a great time to shop. So, strap on your seatbelts and get ready to drive across the border for Black Friday deals!

Before you go, check out these tips for Black Friday shopping.

1. View store Ads in advance

As Canadians we likely won't receive US retail ads or print materials sent to our house. However, many retailers have online ads available posted in their website.

Check out each store you are interested in going to and view their flyers in advance. Retailers would normally have deals posted on their site days before Black Friday giving you the advantage to compare prices.

2. Check outlet mall websites

Yes, check the outlet mall websites for deals. Outlet malls like Premium outlets have deals listed on their site. Some are even specially geared towards Canadian shoppers so make sure to check them out.

3. Research, Research, Research

Research should be done in advance when buying big ticket items (i.e computers, tvs) to ensure you are getting a good deal. Online reviews on products can be found either on the retailer's website or sites like amazon, pricegrabber, or ebay. Realizing you have a bad product after driving so far can be a disappointing experience. Doing research in advance can arm you with the knowledge to guide your decision in buying a good product.

4. Print the ads

Going from store to store can be exhausting. Printing the ads off the retailers or the mall's website can be helpful when planning your day of bargain shopping.  Planning your day accordingly can help you manage your time and your energy as you go through the day.

5. Gift receipts
Most people shop for holiday gifts on Black Friday. Of course, we all know this is a great time to buy for loved ones. However, ensure that you ask for gift receipts. That way you can avoid any hassles of returning or exchanging the product if necessary.

6. Stack up on points

If you have a credit card that is attached to a point system like Air Miles or Aeroplan, purchasing Black Friday deals using these credit cards can easily earn points faster. In addition, points cards like Air Miles, offer deals on bonus points when you purchase from specific stores. Not only will you get
great deals, but you're also accumulating points for free items later on.

7. Plan the amount of money you can spend

Although it is tempting to buy anything on sale it wouldn't help if you rack up credit card debt after Black Friday shopping. If you are unable to pay off the credit card quick enough, the money you saved from the sale may not be worth it after the credit card interest.

8. Check the Canada Border Services Agency for daily limitations

Before you go cross border shopping, make sure to check with the Canada Border Service Agency. There are limits on the amount of goods purchased that can be brought back into Canada that are exempt from taxes. Normally, a 24 hour stay entitles you to maximum of $50 of pucrhased goods and/or gifts. The longer you stay, the higher the maximum. This information could change so checking with the Canada Border Service Agency is recommended.

9. Buy online

If you have no way of driving across the border for Black Friday, don't worry. US Retailers always offer online Black Friday deals. Their online store is open 24 hours, so you may be able to snag a great deal before anyone else does in-store. Signing up for email updates for these online deals can also help you
with your shopping.

Research and planning are key to Black Friday shopping especially if you are driving from afar. Keeping these ideas in mind will allow you to have a stress-free and successful shopping experience.

US Thanksgiving 2011 is November 24. Have fun and hope you snag the best deals out there!
